Mediterranean Diet

A proper diet is closely linked to our fitness and health. The well-known Mediterranean Diet, with the assistance of the science of dietetics, is the ideal standard of nutrition.
The principle of the Mediterranean Pyramid is simple.
Food groups are placed one on top of the other, depending on their importance.
At the base of the pyramid there are foods that are more necessary, and as we move towards the top, we find foods that must be consumed less often, although they are necessary. No food is excluded from the pyramid. All of them do have a place in our diet. It is important, however, to follow the amounts and instructions given in the pyramid.


Basic foods and their benefits:


Red meat (to be consumed wisely and not very often)
Red meat is rich in proteins, vitamins of the B complex and iron. It contains, however, large amounts of saturated fatty acids and cholesterol. So you should consume limited quantities of red meat and replace it, as much as possible, with other equally important and beneficial foods.



Eggs, sweets, ice-cream, soft drinks (to be consumed moderately, in small amounts)
Eggs contain excellent proteins and vitamins A, D and B. Their yolk, however, also contains cholesterol.
Sweets, ice-cream, soft drinks and sugar-containing foods are rich in calories and pleasant, but should not be eaten on a daily basis.



Potatoes, legumes, nuts, olives (necessary; to be consumed moderately)
These are foods that are necessary for their proteins, inorganic elements and vitamins. Legumes, for example, can be a perfect replacement of meat. However, you should not eat such foods too often or too much.



Poultry (white meat, instead of red meat)
They are a good source of proteins, iron and vitamins of the B complex. They contain less saturated fat than that of red meat. They also contain minerals which are valuable for your bodies. You shouldn't view them, however, as the only source of protein.



Fish (everything that swims is good)
They are tender, tasty and rich in phosphorus, Ω3, fatty acids, proteins, vitamins and minerals. You should eat fish 2 or 3 times a week.



Dairy products (a natural source of calcium)
Milk and its products, yoghurt, cream and cheese, contain calcium, which is necessary for your bodies. They are also rich in proteins, minerals, phosphorus and vitamins A, D and B. Add to your diet at least one portion of them every day.



Olive oil (gold is shiny))
Liquid or solid fats, butter, cream and vegetable oils provide us with energy and fatty acids. However, you should be very careful with their consumption. You should prefer olive oil due to its countless benefits for your body and its high nutritional value. As it is a major source of monosaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamin Ε, olive oil is considered the very cornerstone of Mediterranean Diet.



Fruits, vegetables (to be consumed abundantly and daily)
They are among the most healthy foods, with numerous benefits. They contain plenty of vitamins, antioxidants and fiber, which are necessary for keeping your bodies in a balanced condition and protecting your health. They should be on your table everyday, because nothing is more precious than the gifts of nature.



Cereals (on top of the list, where they belong)
Cereals and especially whole-grain ones, should be the very staples of our diet. They are rich in hydrocarbon, vitamins and valuable fiber, and thus they are indispensable.
