As AB aims at offering responsible choices to consumers, it works with organisations and suppliers in order to improve the sustainability of their own chain. In 2013, after the initiative of AB and WWF Greece, in cooperation with Manios Fish and the Fisheries Research Institute, a pioneering programme started, aiming at improving the sustainability of Kavala’s small fishing boat fleet, which mainly fishes for anchovies and sardines. The programme is being implemented for the first time in Greece and the Mediterranean and is based on the MSC Fisheries Standard.
AB & WWF: ‘Improving the sustainability of our seafood suppliers’
The improvement of fishing practices, the better management of aquaculture units, and the responsible disposal and consumption of seafood, will keep our seas alive, supporting professional fishermen and securing fish for future generations. As AB aims at offering responsible choices to consumers, it cooperates with organisations and suppliers in order to improve the sustainability of their own chain.
In 2015, the foundations were put in place for the plan to certify Kavala’s fishing fleet. Now we are heading towards our greatest challenge: cooperation between fishermen, scientists, state services, organisations, and the supply chain, in order to put into effect the necessary steps for the sustainability of the fleet, based on the action plan that was agreed upon by all parties involved.
For consumers, purchasing certified seafood bearing the blue MSC label is a positive choice that supports fishing communities struggling to stop overfishing. It is a choice that provides them with confidence that the certified product has been produced with responsible management and sustainable practices that secure the health of our seas and of the people who depend on them.
In 2014, the evaluation of AB aquaculture suppliers in relation to their sustainability was completed. WWF Greece in cooperation with its international network drafted a code of environmentally good practices for the Mediterranean gilt-head bream and sea bass. The implementation programme has put into place the necessary groundwork for the development of responsible aquaculture in Greece.
